Western Health in Victoria has set out on a comprehensive transformation of its IT infrastructure.

Following a tender process, IT solutions provider Logicalis Australia was awarded a contract to assist the health service with its Modern Workplace transformation programme. According to a media release, the programme aims to improve collaboration, communication, security, and document management capabilities within the organisation.

WHY IT MATTERS

Western Health, a major healthcare provider that serves nearly a million people, has faced a number of technical and end-user challenges with its existing infrastructure. It has dealt with disjointed processes, ineffective tools, as well as storage and computing limitations.

To this end, it started its digital transformation and modernisation programme with patient data and identity at its core.

Aside from improving operational efficiency and enhancing quality of care, the Modern Workplace programme provides a foundation for data analytics and AI, "enabling us to harness the power of data to further enhance patient outcomes," said Cameron McBride, director of Digital Technology Services at Western Health.

THE LARGER TREND

The digital transformation began last year with the rebuilding of Western Health's identity management system, which was also delivered by Logicalis. Based on Microsoft Active Directory, this system manages identity, authentication, and authorisation for all users of its network and IT resources.

This rework later enabled the rollout of an ERP and an EMR system within Western Health. A records management solution was also implemented to improve document management and compliance.

Logicalis also facilitated the health service's integration of Microsoft 365, which allows in-office and remote workers to work securely and efficiently. The IT company also fortified their Microsoft Azure cloud environment.
